What is Anxiety?
Stress and worry are normal feelings related to experiences but they are entirely different from the intense feeling of concern where you don’t have any control. This is anxiety and it affects our daily lives in school, work and relationships. Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illnesses found in the population. This refers to an ongoing worry, nervousness, or fear that is excessive and has negative effects on a person’s ability to function.
Types of Anxiety?
Anxiety disorder is intense emotions that affect a person’s wellbeing. This disorder can be categorized into different types depending on the fear or worries that the person has. This type of anxiety has their corresponding signs and symptoms.
Generalized Anxiety Disorder
Generalized anxiety disorder- the most common type which generally lasts for at least 6 months interferes typically with a person’s daily life. This intense fear, worry, and stress may affect them both physically and mentally. This type of anxiety is a chronic and excessive anxiety about activities.
- Excessive worries or anxiety that does not go away.
- Overthinking about the worst possible scenario.
- Considering a situation as threatening even when it’s not.
- Excessive worries about making the wrong decision.
- Inability to let go of a worry.
- Difficulty concentrating.
Physical signs and symptoms are:
- Muscle tension or muscle ache
- Diarrhea or constipation
This is a sudden attack of intense anxiety. This is recurring, unexpected and uncontrollable.
- A feeling of doom and impending danger
- Severe health anxiety.
- Feeling that you are not yourself
Physical symptoms are:
- Increase heart rate
- Excessive sweating
- Tingling, numbness and weakness
- Difficulty breathing
- Chest pain
- Digestive problem
Social Anxiety (Social Phobia)
This type of fear is different from being an introvert. Social anxiety is a fear of interactions or situations where there is a possibility that they may be scrutinized. This social phobia is considered severe if it already disrupts your life that affects your relationship with other even with your friends.
- Fear of unfamiliar situations
- An obsession that you are being watched or even judge by others
- Inability to speak up when you need to.
This intense fear is related to scenarios, animals, objects. The person will do everything to avoid the particular phobia that can affect their daily lives.
- An intense feeling of fear when confronted with a certain phobia.
- Inability to control fears even though they are aware that this is irrational.
- Going too far to avoid the objects or animals that cause your fear.
- Inability to do your usual routine because of your fear.
ThisIs the fear of being alone in public places. Most people with agoraphobia never leave their home. Some people that have agoraphobia may also experience panic disorder.
Symptoms of agoraphobia:
- Obsessive fear of socializing with people regardless of whether they know or not the person that they deal with.
- Severe stress whenever the person is not at home
- Excessive tension and stress during routine activities such as going to the market, or talk with strangers.
- Worrying that you are unable to protect yourself if some trouble occurs.
- Feeling that you are the prisoner of your fear, it stops you doing things you like.
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
This kind of anxiety is due to a traumatic event that affects the person physically or emotionally.
Symptoms of PTSD are:
- Re-living the trauma-they reliving the trauma through a nightmare or images.
- Being alert-PTSD often has difficulty sleeping, lack of concentration, and overly aware of the signs of danger.
- Avoiding to remember the event.
- Avoiding activities that can remind them of the trauma.
- Feeling emotionally numb-this person no longer cares about their daily routine, family, and friends, and make them feel numb.
- Felt easily angered and distracted
- Engaged in self- destructive behaviour.
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD
Considers as a devastating type of disorder since they experience obsessions and compulsions; obsessions are irrational thoughts and urges that can cause distress and anxiety. Compulsions are base on behavior that having a strong desire to perform specific action or activity.
- You are the only one worrying about a certain thing.
- You try to get away with thoughts when they occur.
- You think that your action isn’t enough, and continue doing it.
- You keep on doing things regularly, and even it shouldn’t be.
- You have the urge to do a specific task, or else your anxiety may trigger.
Anxiety is very treatable. There are a lot of ways that can help no matter what type of anxiety you have.

It is not easy having an anxiety disorder. We have to understand and don’t complicate things for them.
